Historic Mill

Set within the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this historic former Mill is located in a unique landscape shaped by historic waterways and traditional rural architecture.

The existing mill building had been altered over time and was in a compromised condition, requiring careful consideration in both its restoration and future use. The project involved the creation of a new mill house, combining sensitive restoration work with a contemporary architectural approach, including a striking glass wing that sits alongside the historic structure.

Berry Stonework was commissioned to deliver specialist flint walling and masonry features that would complement both the heritage setting and the modern design elements of the building.

A key feature of the project is a double-height knapped flint wall at the entrance, creating a strong visual statement while reflecting traditional building techniques. The wall incorporates hand-knapped flint corners, carefully crafted to achieve a crisp and refined finish. Flintwork was also used internally, forming a distinctive flint fireplace that connects the interior of the building with the materials and character of the surrounding landscape.

The result is a project that brings together traditional flint masonry and contemporary architecture, creating a building that sits comfortably within its historic setting while offering a modern living space.

Kiklo Spaces

Kiklo Spaces in Petersfield is a contemporary commercial project designed as a high-end car storage facility, showcasing some of the finest vehicles in the world.

Berry Stonework was commissioned to deliver specialist flint walling as part of the building’s architectural design, demonstrating how traditional materials can be used effectively in a modern commercial setting.

The project features extensive areas of fully knapped flint, carefully laid to create a clean and refined finish. A light lime mortar was used to complement the dark flint faces, enhancing the contrast and giving the walls a crisp, contemporary appearance.

The flintwork forms a key part of the interior environment, providing a distinctive backdrop that highlights the vehicles on display while adding texture and depth to the space.

This project reflects the versatility of flint masonry in contemporary architecture, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern design to create a unique and visually striking commercial space.

Cottage in the South Downs

Set within the historic flint walls of the Goodwood Estate, this traditional flint cottage is an understated building from the roadside that reveals a carefully considered and high-quality remodelling.

The project involved the restoration and alteration of existing galleted flint elevations, many of which required repair and careful reworking to retain their original character. New openings were introduced into the existing structure, requiring the creation of knapped flint quoins and arches, precisely detailed to integrate seamlessly with the historic masonry.

An extension was also constructed to rebalance the rear elevation, complementing the proportions and materials of the original building. A contemporary glass link was inserted into the flintwork, providing a subtle transition between old and new while maintaining the integrity of the existing structure.

Berry Stonework carried out specialist flint walling and restoration work, ensuring that both the repaired and newly constructed elements matched the texture, colour and craftsmanship of the original masonry.

The result is a project that combines traditional flint masonry, heritage restoration and contemporary design, creating a building that sits naturally within the Goodwood landscape while offering a refined and modern living space.

Hampshire Garden

A private Hampshire garden project designed to bring a large outdoor space to life through traditional materials, craftsmanship and timeless English garden design.

Working with natural flint, handmade brickwork and carefully considered detailing, the project combines structured terraces, retaining walls and feature stairways to create a series of elegant landscaped spaces that feel both established and sympathetic to their surroundings.

Traditional flintwork panels framed with warm red brick were used throughout the garden to introduce texture, character and a strong sense of heritage, while the soft lime mortar tones complement the surrounding planting and natural landscape.

The completed garden balances formal structure with relaxed planting, creating a space that evolves beautifully through the seasons and reflects the enduring appeal of traditional English garden design.

Modern House

This modern house by the coast, was one of Berry Stonework’s first projects to explore the use of flint walling within a contemporary architectural setting.

The design brings together a palette of modern materials, including zinc roofing, glass and charred timber, alongside traditional galleted flint masonry, creating a strong contrast between old and new.

Berry Stonework carried out specialist flintwork across the project, including carefully detailed galleted flint elevations and flint quoins, designed to complement the clean lines of the modern structure while retaining the character and texture of traditional masonry.

The combination of fully knapped flint, precise detailing and light mortar finishes allows the flintwork to sit comfortably alongside contemporary materials, enhancing both the architectural form and the overall visual impact of the building.

This project demonstrates how traditional flint masonry techniques can be successfully integrated into modern architecture, combining time-honoured craftsmanship with innovative design to create a distinctive and high-quality finish.

Flint House Revealed

This flint cottage had previously been covered in a heavy sand and cement render, leaving the building visually out of place within the surrounding landscape.

The removal of the render revealed an original galleted flint façade with yellow stock brick detailing, although the masonry beneath was in poor condition. The use of cement had caused cracking and damage to the underlying structure, requiring extensive repair and rebuilding.

Berry Stonework undertook a full programme of flint restoration and masonry repair, carefully removing damaged sections and reinstating the galleted flint facing using traditional techniques. New work was matched to the existing materials to ensure consistency in both appearance and performance.

Structural integrity was improved through the introduction of helical bar reinforcement, strengthening weakened areas of the wall while maintaining the character of the original construction. Arches were also rebuilt, incorporating knapped flint detailing to restore their form and definition.

The result is a complete transformation, returning the building to a more authentic and visually balanced state, and demonstrating the importance of using appropriate materials such as lime mortar and traditional flint masonry techniques in the restoration of historic buildings.
